Planetary nebula

Planetary Nebula Definition

A phenomenon occurring when a star begins to run out of its nuclear fuel. Its outer shell begins to expand outwards, forming a ring or sphere shape around the remaining star. This round planet-like shape of ionized gas is where the name planetary nebula comes from.

An example of a planetary nebula can be seen in NGC 6826 the Blinking Eye Nebula.
